INDIANA REPORT
OCTOBER
MEETING
Fur
Takers from across Indiana were well represented
at the Natural Resource Study Committee Meeting held 10/3/07. The NRSC is a
Legislative Committee that oversees the DNR in regards to Fish & Wildlife
issues. "Coyote Population and the Capturing and Selling of Coyotes" was the
topic of discussion and had a slot on the agenda.
The
IDNR spoke to the Legislators about reasons for "disposing" of coyotes and
making "possession" of parts, hides, glands, skulls, live, dead, etc. illegal.
FTA Chapters spoke, on behalf of trappers, to be able to take coyotes at anytime
of the year for profit and that to "dispose" of said coyote would make them
worthless and trappers would not be as inclined to harvest them.
The meeting had a spirited debate and all that testified were well received. The
Indiana Legislators (in debate) sided with Fur Takers on this issue and are
concerned about the rising Coyote population and want trappers to be unhindered
with respect to coyote taking. The Legislative Committee is requesting the IDNR
"to work this out with the trappers" before they get involved. The Indiana
Legislators understand the value & service that a trapper does regarding coyote
control in our state and want us to have every incentive possible to do so.
The next step for Fur Takers is to (again) try and work this out with INDNR. We
will take the steps needed to make ourselves available. In the upcoming months
"WE" may need to go to Public Hearings" about this issue and it is very
important that every Trapper or Friend of Trapper show up and be heard.
The Public Hearings dates will be posted when available so keep checking back.
